Fire Fighters from Union County and aircraft from State Forestry are working on two fires that began last week in northwestern Union County.
The Newkirk fire started Wednesday on private land about five miles north of Folsom and had consumed about about 20 acres as of Thursday morning with 50% containment. Union County firefighters with help from State Forestry Helicopters and other agencies got a quick handle on the blaze and continue to watch it for flare ups as winds and high temps keep the area hot. As of Sunday afternoon the fire had consumed 39 acres and is 100% contained according to New Mexico State Forestry. No cause has been listed for this fire.
The Emory Gap Fire started on Friday June 8th, by lightning with Union County fire personnel and State Forestry aircraft battling this blaze. This fire is burning on private land, 8 miles north of Folsom, NM in Union County and has spread into Colorado. It’s estimated at 900 acres combined for both states. This fire is 60% contained in New Mexico as of Sunday evening so far only one structure is threatened.
