May 2018
Welcome to the 2018 BA/MD Cohort!

The University of New Mexico’s Combined BA/MD Degree Program is pleased to announce that Raton High School senior Brittany Fleming will be joining the program in the fall of 2018.

Together, all 28 students in her cohort will take on a challenging four-year curriculum designed to prepare them for medical school.

“It’s such an exciting time of the year in the BA/MD Program, as we admit the new class of students,” said Greg Martin, UNM Professor and, for the past seven years, Director of the BA/MD Program.

Each year, the 28 New Mexico high school students selected receive provisional acceptance to the UNM School of Medicine. Students also receive a last-dollar scholarship covering undergraduate tuition and living expenses.

As undergraduates at UNM, students benefit academically from BA/MD-specific
advisors, active-learning classrooms, and a summer training program in rural communities around the state. After completing a bachelor’s degree, students continue on to their medical training at the School of Medicine.

“It’s so gratifying to see the program thriving—these students from high schools from small towns across the state are now in residency at the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins, and they’re chief residents in Pediatrics and Family Medicine,” says Martin. “We have high expectations for all of our students, and they’re meeting and exceeding them, because they’re not as high as the expectations the students have for themselves.”

The Combined BA/MD Degree Program is one solution to the physician shortage in New Mexico. The program selects broadly diverse students partly for their commitment to serving as physicians in the state.

Fleming is the first Raton High School graduate to join the program.
