In Loving Memory of Peter “Robert” Abeyta

Peter “Robert” Abeyta, 69, passed away suddenly Thursday, May 3, 2018 at home in San Juan Plaza, Segundo, Colorado. He was the oldest of seven children. He was born July 13, 1948 in Trinidad, Colorado to Perfecto B. Abeyta and Ercilia (Aragon) Abeyta. Robert was the proud father of four sons, Robby, Michael, Damien and Marques. He was the grandfather of four, three girls and one boy. He is preceded in death by his father Perfecto Abeyta, his brothers Michael, David, Alvin and his son Damien. He is survived by his mother Ercilia Abeyta, brothers Morris and Stephen (Yvonne), sister Rhoda, three sons, four grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
Through his lifetime he was a very talented and successful carpenter/journeyman. Shortly after high school in the early 1970’s, Robert together with his brothers, Morris, David and Alvin, started a business/shop in Denver, Colorado called Custom Bars and Accessories. In the beginning they specialized in refinishing bars and furniture. Soon their business turned into making custom wood working and upholstery. Robert’s specialty became cabinetry and wood working. In the 1980’s he became Manager/Partner to one of the largest wood fabricating businesses in Denver.
Robert left Denver in the late 1980’s and lived in Oklahoma and New Mexico before returning to Trinidad in 1997. He continued his talent of wood working and remodeling all over the Trinidad area until he was forced to retire in 2006 after suffering a massive heart attack. During his retirement years Robert began expressing his talent in artistic drawing.
Robert always carried a reputation as a “tough guy” everywhere he went. Most everyone who knew him respected him and appreciated his talent and his demeanor. We will always miss his animated way of telling a story. He new exactly how to juice it up and make it better and funnier. He could tell a joke like no other. He always had you laughing hysterically before he even got to the punch line. He wasn’t just the tough guy, he was the funny guy.
Robert enjoyed his retirement years living his life to the fullest the way he wanted to.
