Joe N. Gonzales passed away on May 25, 2018 at his home at the age of 88. Joe was born in Cuervo, New Mexico March 14, 1930, child of Maclovio and Emilia Gonzales. At the age of 17 he graduated from Santa Rosa, High School. He left home to attend Business College in Chilicothee, Missouri, where he earned an Associate Degree in Telegraphy. At the age of 19 he started working for the Santa Fe Railroad, he worked there until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Arcenio Gonzales, brothers in law, Tony Martinez, and John Wagner.
Joe is survived by his children, Yvonne (David) Sandoval of Raton, Elaine (Dan) Fodor of Trinidad and Michael Gonzales of Raton. He is survived by his grandchildren Michelle (Travis) Valdez, Melinda (Dwayne) Baca, Jason (Jennifer) Sandoval, Jonathan Arthur and Donnie Arthur. Also surviving are his great-grand children Derrick (Christina) Valdez, Jordan Valdez, McKenna Valdez, Mason Arthur, and Kyler Sandoval, Ariana Baca, Matthew Baca, and great- great grandchildren Daesyn and Phoenyx.
Joe is also survived by his sisters Helen Wagner, Josie Martinez, Gloria (John) Eck, Lucinda (Cheno) Romero, Buddy (Ella Marie) Gonzales, Bertha (Herman)Gomez and his sister-in-law Margaret Alice Gonzales.
Joe was an avid golfer and won many tournaments throughout his years including the Raton City Chamber Playoffs and 2 hole in ones. He also loved to bowl, play pool and play cards. He loved his children and grandchildren and was always eager to see them whenever possible. Joe will be remembered for his great sense of humor and his love for his family. He enjoyed playing on his computer, keeping up with family on Facebook, as well as playing on his cell phone. He continued to keep up with basketball, football and baseball.
Joe will be greatly missed by his family, the Ortega families, and his friends.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Monday June 4th, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Recited by David Sandoval. Followed by the Solemn Mass of the Resurrection at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Church with Father Bill Woytavich as the Celebrant. Rite of Committal and Internment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
