Mary Jean Skinner died peacefully on May 12, 2018, after a long, full and satisfying life. She was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on August 16, 1921, to Douglas and Glaydes Elliott. She is survived by her three children Jeff, Scott and Wife Sherry, and Leslie and husband Roy Fernandez. She was smitten with her eight grandchildren and her thirteen, soon to be fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son Douglas Elliott Skinner, and by her husband, Bob. One brother, Jim, a daughter in law Dianne, and granddaughter Tonya also preceded her in death.
Mary Jean grew up in Sioux Falls, and attended Carleton College before she moved to Denver, Colorado. While attending CU Boulder, she met and married Bob. They moved to Raton in 1948, where May Jean became a full-time homemaker. She was a Cub Scout den mother, homeroom mother for many a year. Charter Member of the 7th Street Coffee Club, a member of PEO, and the MCMC Ladies’ Auxiliary. She loved traveling New Mexico and the nation with Bob for Bar Associations get togethers. She was a lifelong Episcopalian and was dedicated to all aspects of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Raton.
Whether you called her Mrs. Skinner, Mary Jean, MJ, Grandma, G’ma, Grandma Skinner, or mom, you knew her as a loving, kind and special friend.
Funeral Services for Mary Jean Skinner will be at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Raton, at noon on May 19, 2018. With Rev. Kathy Boeschenstein. Pallbearers are Chris Skinner, Brian Skinner, Roy Fernandez, Henry Fernandez, Beau Fernandez and Mike Lemons. Honorary pallbearers are Jeffrey Skinner, Jr, Justin Skinner, David Lee Alexander and Ed Irvine. Because of Mary Jean’s affinity for dogs throughout her life in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Raton Humane Society (PO Box 1321 Raton, NM 87740) in her memory.
