Sharon Ann King, age 72, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19th, 2018. She was born September 13, 1945 in Trinidad, Colorado to William J. Doherty and Fern (Rose) Doherty, a cattle rancher on the Colorado New Mexico border. She loved the ranch life and riding her horse on the Dry Creek Ranch. She was the 1962 Trinidad State Junior College Tournament Princess and Sweetheart Queen of Branson High School in 1963. She was an active and accomplished member in 4H. She graduated from Branson High School in 1963 and was a member of the National Honor Society.
She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Adams State 1967 and was on the wool judging team and the Rodeo Club. She taught four years of elementary school in Colorado before attending West Texas State University where she received her Master of Education degree in August of 1971. She married John B. King, a rancher from Capulin, on June 10, 1972. She always said she toured the world and married the man across the hill. She dedicated her life to working on the family’s Hereford cattle ranch, raising her kids and always helping others. Her proudest accomplishments were her three children Garrett, Charlta and Garland. She was glad to see her oldest, Garrett, marry Mindy and be at the birth of her first grandchild, Macy Ann. She was happy to see Garland, the youngest, wed Lana and gain another grandson, Eli.
An active member of Lariat and New Mexico CowBelles for over 40 years, she was the 1980 New Mexico CowBelle of the Year. She was a founding member of the Five States meeting that gathered and educated cattlewomen from the surrounding states. She served as New Mexico CowBelle President in 2013.
She was actively involved in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, the surrounding communities, schools, various agriculture organizations and legislation. She was known for her cooking which if you received goodies or had a meal fixed by Sharon you were blessed. She also enjoyed sewing for her grandkids. She loved her Hereford cattle and proudly branded each of them with the J bar J brand. She was always helping someone and putting everyone before herself.
She is preceded in death by her father, William J. Doherty; mother, Fern (Rose) Doherty; and nephew, Joe Jackson.
She is survived by her husband, John B. King; oldest son, Garrett and wife Mindy and granddaughter Macy Ann; daughter, Charlta; youngest son, Garland and wife Lana and grandson Eli Ritchie; sister, Eileen Jackson and family of Kansas; cousins Beverly Preis of Arizona and Darlene Wilson of Maryland as well as numerous other cousins and relatives.
A rosary will be held Thursday, January 25th at 7 pm. At Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 26th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church 235 N Convent Street in Trinidad, Colorado at 10:00 A.M. A meal for family and friends will follow at St. Joseph’s Hall in Trinidad.
