New Mexico fishing and stocking report for Jan. 24

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Catches of the week:

The following came in late but are catches definitely worth mentioning:

Rio Grande: Daniel Romero of Taos caught a 22.5-inch brown trout Jan. 13. He was using a streamer.
Ute Lake: Bill Lampman of Logan caught an 8-pound, 30-inch walleye Jan. 12. He was fishing in 60 feet of water and using a Slingblade.

Northeast

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: As of this past weekend, ice thickness was about 12 inches. Fishing was fair to good using meal worms, salmon eggs and ice jigs for rainbow trout, kokanee and perch. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (575) 377-1594. An ice fishing tournament is scheduled for Jan. 28. Registration starts at 6 am. For information call 1-575-377-2420.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: The lake remains closed to ice fishing due to poor ice conditions. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Lake Maloya: The lake reopened to ice fishing Jan. 20. Fishing was reported as excellent as most anglers caught limits of trout. Best baits were salmon eggs and pink PowerBait. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake: Anglers are reminded that ice fishing is not permitted on this lake.

Pecos River: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms and egg patterns for trout.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 43 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, wooly buggers, San Juan worms and scuds for brown and rainbow trout.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 512 cfs. Fishing was fair using streamers and weighted wooly buggers for rainbow trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week. No ice fishing is allowed on this lake.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Ice fishing is not permitted.

Storrie Lake: The ice has disappeared and the shoreline is once again open for bank fishing. We had no reports from anglers. For updates, call the state park office at 505-425-7278.

Ute Lake: Fishing was good using Slingblades and slab spoons at 50 feet for white bass. Anglers fishing at that depth also picked up catfish and a few walleye. We had no other reports.

Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 350 cfs. Fishing was good using egg patterns, streamers, small jigs and salmon eggs for trout.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain, Bernalillo Drain, Corrales Drain and Peralta Drain was good using wax worms, San Juan worms, salmon eggs, worms and small streamers for trout. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake: Closed to ice fishing due to thin ice conditions. There was some open water for shoreline fishing this past week. Anglers managed to catch a few trout. They were using PowerBait, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait. For updates on ice conditions, contact the state park office at (505) 876-2391.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 101 cfs and 102 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using streamers, worms and salmon eggs for a mix of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was good using worms, streamers, micro mays, San Juan worms and copper John Barrs for trout.

Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

Fenton Lake: Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 829-3630.

Heron Lake: The ice around the shoreline has disappeared and the lake is open to bank fishing. We had no reports from anglers.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 25 cfs. Early in the week, fishing on the Jemez was fair using wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from other streams in the area.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing pressure was light. Fishing was slow for all species.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River: Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 357 cfs with visibility less than one foot. Fishing through the Quality Waters was good using red annelids, streamers, wooly buggers, red hots, Desert Storms, red larva, bunny leeches, egg patterns and princess nymphs. Fishing through the bait waters was good using worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs, San Juan worms and wooly buggers.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Central and Youth ponds was very good using meal worms, PowerBait, Zeke’s trout bait, salmon eggs and San Juan worms for trout. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was fair to good using small streamers, egg patterns and olive and green bunny leeches. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and salmon egg marshmallow combinations for trout.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using spoons and jigs for white bass. Our only other report was of a largemouth bass caught by an angler using a jig.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 539 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was very good using worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Southeast

Alto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bataan Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs for trout.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was fair to good using worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and wax worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and small spoons for trout.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and meal worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait for trout.

Grindstone Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jal Lake: Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Lake Van: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was very good using homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes for trout.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 20 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 9.7 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs for trout.

Santa Rosa Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
