Raton Fire fighters responded to a small house fire at 137 Galesteo in Raton Friday morning at about 7:40 a.m.
The fire was concentrated in the attic and was caused by an electrical short according to Fire Chief Jim Matthews. Most of the damage to the structure was caused by the work fire fighters had to do to get to the fire in the ceiling.
While fire fighters worked on that situation an ambulance crew from Raton responded to an overturned NM DOT truck near Maxwell this morning. The extent of injuries are unknown at this time.
It was an early morning for Raton city crews and contractors as they cleared a path in the 13 inches of snow Raton received throughout the day and into the night Thursday and early Friday morning. The snow caused several travel problems as well as closed schools in Raton, Cimarron and Des Moines. Outside of Raton snow amounts added up to 8″ in Springer and Maxwell with lesser amount as you headed east to as little as 2″ inches in Clayton. Travel in and around the area was hampered by the snow but by early Friday morning the sun had broken out and road surfaces began to improve.
