The 2016 Master of the Mountain Adventure Race began at a misty cool Lake Maloya Saturday morning, September 10th with temps reaching into the upper 30s.
The fourth edition of M.O.M had 84 competitors with the runners starting the six mile run as the sun peaked over the mesa and started to warm things on their way over the dam at Lake Maloya just after 8:00 a.m. The team shooters were already on the Whittington Center property some 20 miles away, making the tactical shotgun course come alive as shooters worked their way through the six stop course which was a different configuration from years past.
Runners in the event started the race at the boat dock at 7,500 feet in elevation and worked their way west on a trail that takes them up and over the mesa to near Soda Pocket Camp Ground and back to the lake. From there they either take a kayak and head out around the lake or handoff the timing sensor to a team mate to make the kayak run. Many of the teams were able to make up some time in this part of the event as more of the teams came in closer together than they did on the run.
Once done, the teams handed off to a cyclist who began the 20 mile trek out to the Coal Canyon area on the north side of the Whittington Center property just off Hwy 555.
