New Mexico Game and Fish Fishing Report June 28, 2016

Catches of the week: Abiquiu Reservoir: Robert Lopez caught a 25-inch walleye June 25. He was using a crank bait.  Cochiti Lake:  Donny Kelley-Currens, 15, caught and released a 31-inch, 10-pound northern pike June 26. He was trolling for white bass and using a crank bait on 8-pound test line. Elephant Butte: Andrew Mangum of Las Cruces caught a 20-inch, 4-pound largemouth bass June 21. He was using a Texas rigged worm. Fenton Lake: Charlie Nickolson, 6, of Tucson caught a 20-inch rainbow trout June 25. He was using a gold spoon. Lake Maloya: Anthony Gonzales of Clayton caught a 27-inch rainbow trout June 26. He was using PowerBait. Seven Springs Brood Pond: Andrew Reser, 9, of Albuquerque caught a 17-inch brown trout June 20. He was using a yellow humpy. Ute Lake:  Mark Nikirk of Colorado Springs caught and released a 5.11-pound smallmouth bass June 26. Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species. The lake level rose about a foot this past week with heavy rains in the area.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 34 cfs. Fishing was good using stimulators, parachute Adams, bead-head hare’s ears, copper John Barrs, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was excellent using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs and brown with red tail and yellow with red tail Pistol Petes.

Conchas Lake:  Fishing was good using salt craws, tubes, creature baits and grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, curly tail grubs and minnows for white bass. Fishing was good using shrimp, liver, hot dogs and stink bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using minnows, curly tail grubs and bottom bouncer night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was good using worms and grubs for bluegill. We had no reports on other species.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms for trout.

Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, spoons and spinners for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was fair trolling kokanee killers, Double Whammies and Arnie’s tipped with corn for kokanee and rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using small spoons, PowerBait and salmon eggs from the bank and from anchored boats for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using worms for perch. A few small northern pike were caught by anglers using spoons.

Gallinas River: Trout fishing was fair to good using worms, salmon eggs and hoppers.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was good using Kastmasters, Super Dupers, PowerBait, marshmallow salmon egg combinations and worms under a bobber.

Lake Alice: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, parachute Adams, and Pistol Petes for trout.

Los Pinos River: Fishing was very good again this past week as anglers caught limits of trout while using elk hair caddis, mosquito imitations, copper John Barrs, worms, PowerBait, and salmon eggs for trout.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and worms for trout.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, marshmallow salmon egg combinations and Pistol Petes for trout.

Pecos River: Stream flow on Monday was 91 cfs. Fishing was good using prince nymphs, elk hair caddis, stimulators, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 112 cfs. Fishing on the Red was good using worms, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and stimulators for trout.

Red River City Ponds: Fishing was good using PowerBait and worms for trout.

Rio Costilla: Stream flow near Costilla on Monday morning was 84 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 1,260 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using wooly buggers, Kastmasters and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 69 cfs. Fishing was good using San Juan worms, bead-head hare’s ears, poundmeisters and worms for trout.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 20 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms for trout.

Santa Barbara River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers, Fisher Chick spinners and PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Shuree Ponds: Opens for the season July 1.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Action slowed a bit over the past weekend but overall fishing was good using salmon eggs, cheese and PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for walleye slowed some this past week but a few anglers managed to catch limits. They were vertical jigging minnows and also reported catching a few crappie. Fishing was fair to good using tubes, senkos, salt craws, sweet beavers and curly tail grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using liver, cut bait and homemade dough bait for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing the upper end of the Canadian arm. Fishing was good using worms under a bobber for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.

Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits for walleye. The bigger fish were caught at the upper end of the lake. Fishing was good using tubes, craws, grubs, jerk baits, crank baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 1,580 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for all species was slow. There were a few tiger muskies caught by anglers using large streamers and crank baits. The water level has been dropping but there is still plenty of water for launching boats.

Brazos River: Fishing was good using worms, elk hair caddis, mosquito patterns and stone fly imitations for trout.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 114 cfs and 232 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using night crawlers, salmon eggs, stimulators, wooly buggers and copper John Barrs for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using liver, prepared baits and hot dogs for catfish. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was fair using Rooster Tails, jerk baits, sweet beavers, tubes, worms and creature baits. Fishing was good using worms under a bobber for bluegill. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, grubs and spinners for white bass. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing at the upper end of the lake was good using PowerBait and Panther Martins for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing was fair to good using Rapalas and Panther Martins for bass. We had no reports on other species.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair with anglers having the best luck trolling Pistol Petes and gold spoons.

Heron Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Panther Martins, orange Double Whammies and Cripplures tipped with corn for kokanee. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for rainbow trout and a few kokanee and lake trout from the bank.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 20 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was slow to fair using San Juan worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the East Fork was fair using elk hair caddis, mosquito patterns and bead-head, pheasant tail nymphs for brown trout. Fishing on the Cebolla River was good using hoppers, salmon eggs, worms and orange and yellow stimulators for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using spoons, Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week. Nonmotorized watercraft are now allowed on Lake Farmington. Fees are $50 for the season or $5 daily.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using poppers, sweet beavers, tubes, senkos, chigger craws, top water lures and baby brush hogs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Anglers fishing for bass reported catching a great number of small fish. Fishing was fair using crank baits, top water lures and jerk baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using PowerBait, marshmallow salmon egg combinations, Rapalas, Kastmasters and Panther Martins for trout. Lonnie Garrison reported great crappie fishing on the Pine Arm. They were using jigs and caught several with one measuring 15 inches. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms, spoons and Pistol Petes for trout.

San Juan River: Stream flow as of Monday morning was decreased to 4,310 cfs. A ramp down from this level may begin this week and last for 12 days. Fishing from boats through the quality waters section was good using jigs, San Juan worms, red larvae, streamers and flashback pheasant tail nymphs. Bank fishing through the bait section was good using Blue Fox spinners, Kastmasters, jerk baits, salmon eggs and worms. Leave your waders at home during the high flow days and either fish from the bank or from a boat and stay safe.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms, yellow humpys and small spoons for trout.

Tingley Beach: Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few catfish caught by anglers fishing the Central Pond and using shrimp and hot dogs.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was very good using worms, spinners and Pistol Petes for trout.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was good using red wigglers for bluegill. Fishing was fair using liver, hot dogs and homemade stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms, salmon eggs and liver for small catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few catfish caught by anglers using liver and homemade dough bait.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using minnows, curly tail grubs, top water lures and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using top water lures, jerk baits, salt craws, tubes, worms and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Night fishing was good using shad, liver, cut bait and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was fair using minnows, curly tail grubs and small jigs for crappie and walleye. We had no reports on other species.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Gila River: Stream flow as of Monday morning was 24 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms under a bobber for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte as of Monday morning was 2,160 cfs. Fishing was fair using beef liver, night crawlers and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was fair using curly tail grubs, minnows and sassy shad for walleye and white bass. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and worms for trout.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 29 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using beef liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing early and late in the day was fair to good using tubes, flukes, top water lures, jerk baits and senkos for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using spinners, salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, corn and worms for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using prepared baits and liver. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake as of Monday morning was 102 cfs. Fishing was very good using liver and frozen crawdads for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 7.5 cfs. Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using senkos, chigger craws, tubes, grubs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, tubes, senkos, worms and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using shrimp, beef liver and frozen crawdads for catfish. A few walleye were caught by anglers using plastic worms and minnows. We had no reports on other species.
