UPDATE3/16/16 Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash Northeast of Roy –
|
HARDING COUNTY, N.M. —Northeastern NM and Harding County family and friends are remembering two New Mexico Department of Transportation workers who died in a tragic accident on State Road 120 on Monday, March 14. The crash happened in the late morning near mile marker 87 east of Roy. The workers were repairing potholes when a vehicle struck a NMDOT vehicle parked off the road which in turn struck the two workers. Anthony Rivera, from Rainsville, and David Eggert, from Wagon Mound, were identified as the victims. They died at the scene. Rivera, 49, had worked 6 years with the department, while Eggert, 53, had worked 2 years. NMDOT Deputy Secretary Anthony Lujan said that both men were extremely hardworking and were some of the department’s finest. This is the first time in 12 years that someone has died on the job with the NMDOT. During that timeframe, the department said that less than five injuries caused by motorists have been recorded. The vehicle that struck the men was driven by Celestin Clavel, 92. Clavel suffered multiple injuries including a broken hip and was airlifted to a Lubbock, Texas hospital after the crash. It’s still not clear what, if any, charges he will face. The NMDOT announced that the scheduled NM State Transportation Committee meeting that had been scheduled for Thursday in Las Vegas has been cancelled out of respect for the victims. |
