TRINIDAD — Jared Lopez, 26, of Trinidad was arrested on February 12, 2016, for the shooting of Steven Valdez on January 30, 2016, according to a press release from the Trinidad Police Department.
On Saturday January 30, 2016, officers observed a white truck disregard a stop sign on the corner of Beech and Main. They followed the truck to the parking lot of Mt. San Rafael Hospital, where police made contact with Jared Lopez, the driver of the pickup truck.
Lopez told police that he had taken his brother-in-law, Steven Valdez, 26, of Trinidad, to the hospital because Valdez had been shot. Valdez was later transported to Parkview Medical Center for surgery and has since been released.
Police charged Lopez with one count of criminal attempt to commit second degree murder, a class 3 felony; and one count of first degree assault, a class 3 felony. He was taken to the Las Animas County Jail on a $75,000 cash or surety bond. He bonded out on February 13, 2016.
