SPRINGER — Change is blowing through the membership of the Springer Chamber of Commerce. Treasurer Timm Trujillo gave his resignation. Member Louise Portillos will be replacing him. In addition, President Anna Phillips is running unopposed for town council, and has been advised by the town’s lawyer that she must resign to avoid any conflicts of interest that may occur as a result of her being both president of the chamber and on the town council. So far, there is still some question as to whether or not Phillips really has to resign and thus, a decision regarding Phillips’s replacement if she resigns her post is being postponed until the March meeting. There was speculation among the members present that if Phillips leaves, the chamber will be forced to curtail its efforts due to lack of another individual wanting to take over the reins as president. “Hopefully someone steps up,” Phillips said, referring to how much work the chamber has done over the past year and a half since she took over, and how sad it will be to see all that hard work fall by the wayside due to lack of interest in the presidential position.
The chamber recognized business owner David Ortiz, owner of the Mary Ortiz Vacation Home. The home is available to rent for short term visits to Springer. It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, and full basement. It is managed by Eddie and Cecilia Olona. Ortiz invited the chamber to meet in his vacation home to help create awareness of this option for overnight stays in Springer for their February meeting and provided lunch for them.
The next chamber meeting will be a St. Patrick’s Day potluck and will occur on Wednesday, March 16, in Room 107 at Luna Community College’s Forrester Building.
