SPRINGER, NM — The Springer Lady Devil varsity volleyball team swept District 5-A, winning the district championship this past Friday, beating the Des Moines Demons in a quick three set match.
The Lady Devils came out strong in the first set, beating the Demons 25-18. During the second set, the Devils played tense and nervously, allowing the Demons to keep the score close. Ultimately, the Lady Devils came out on top, beating the Demons by a small margin of 25-22.
In the third set, Springer went on a scoring run, getting a lead of 12-3. The Demons didn’t give up, and kept fighting throughout the whole set. Determined to win, the Lady Devils did just that with a score of 25-16, making them District 5-A Champions, and giving them high hopes for the upcoming state volleyball tournament.
The Lady Devils will travel to Albuquerque today to compete in the state tournament. Ranked eighth in the state, they will compete against Elida and Victory Christian in pool play this afternoon.
The Lady Devils’ assistant coach, Maria Gonzales when talking about the state tournament said, “There are a lot of strong athletes competing, but getting the chance to play on that court is an honor. I hope to make sure the girls are mindful of that every step of the way, and that they are aware that they deserve to be there. This is the moment they have worked all season for, and it’s their moment to shine. It is our time.”
The state championship is to be held on Saturday, November 14, in the Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque. The Des Moines Demons will also be competing at the state tournament as the number ten team in the state.
Congratulations to the Lady Red Devil Volleyball Team on a job well done. It was great watching you girls play together. Hate to see the season come to an end. So proud of each of you for giving all it took to get where the season ended….as STATE RUNNER UP. You made history for Springer Schools.
