The Springer Lady Red Devil volleyball team put together a strong run to finish the 2015 season as the NM State Class A Volleyball Runner-up.
Coach Michael Archuleta’s team went into the tournament as the #8 seed in the 12 team field and finished second in pool play on Thursday, Nov. 12. They played against the Lady Des Moines Demons in the opening round that night. The Lady Demons and the Lady Red Devils know each other very well and the Lady Demons pushed Springer to the limits as all three games went into overtime with Springer squeaking by 27-25, 29-27, 29-27.
The tight match battle-hardened the Lady Red Devils for Friday’s matches as they swept over Grady (#1 in pool B) 25-14, 25-16, 25-18, and then that night in the semi-finals rolled over Corona (#1 pool C) 25-20, 25-18, 25-7. The win avenged a three game sweep loss to Corona in the opening round of last year’s state tournament.
Friday’s win against Corona, propelled the Springer team into Saturday’s Championship against #1 ranked Elida. The Lady Devils didn’t play as well during the championship as they did on Friday and Elida did enough to win the match in three games with a 25-17, 25-10, 25-16 tally.
With only two Seniors, Kara Burton (Captain) and Traci Taylor, Springer has reason to be optimistic about the future of its volleyball program. Other team members include: Juniors Michelle Finkbone and Danielle Blake; Sophomores Alicia Arias, Katy Scott, Hannah Burton and Shania DeHerrera; Freshmen Elena Maestas and Alicia Thompson.
