Shooting in North Raton sends Two to Hospital

Raton Police were called to the 800 block of North 2nd Street Monday night just before 11:00 p.m. for a report of shots fired. 

Upon arrival officers made contact with with one of the homeowners in the 800 block of North 2nd Street where they were told that several shots had been fired by unknown suspect(s). The shots struck the east side of the residence penetrating the outside wall.

Officers noted in their investigation that it appears there were two different firearms used in the shooting. One weapon was suspected to be a .40 caliber handgun while the other was a .12 gauge shotgun. Officers found several defects which penetrated the exterior wall of the residence and traveled through the living room and kitchen areas where they struck two victims. 

Officers were informed that there were two male victims that had sustained gunshot wounds during the shooting. The victims were transported to MIner’s Colfax Medical Center by private vehicle. Raton Police Chief John Garcia identified the two men as Michael Garcia (19) who was admitted and treated for non-life threatening injures. The second victim Miguel Rodriguez (20) sustained more serious injuries and was flown out to University of New Mexico Medical Center.

Police were also called to the Somerset Apartments last night for shots fired where they found bullet holes also matching a .40 caliber handgun. It is believed the two incidents are related, no injuries were reported from the apartments.
