WALSENBURG — At about 3 pm Monday, Oct. 26, a criminal mischief domestic violence incident happened in Walsenburg that ended up involving a half dozen law enforcement agencies and a continued hunt for a possibly armed felony fugitive.
Walsenburg Police Captain Vince Suarez said in a press statement Tuesday, “Walsenburg Police Department responded to the Dakota Campground on a report of a domestic in progress involving a gun. Upon arrival, the suspect, 33-year old Michael Jackson, fled the scene in a white pickup.”
Police sources tell the World Journal Jackson had allegedly gone to the home of an ex-girlfriend and had wanted to use her car and leave her his white four-door Dodge pick-up. Sources say she did not want to loan her car and the couple argued briefly before Jackson allegedly hit a window on her car with his fist. When the window failed to break, a witness told police Jackson reached into his truck and produced a silver item, the witness described as a 1911 type of semi-automatic pistol, which Jackson used as a blunt instrument to break the car window.
“At about 3:15 pm the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office found the vehicle and Michael Jackson on Hwy. 69. The deputies attempted to contact the suspect but once he saw the deputies he fled,” Captain Suarez said.
As a precaution, John Mall High School, Peakview and Gardner School were all placed on lock down Monday afternoon.
Deputies pursued the vehicle west on Hwy. 69 and through several county roads which led them to Hwy. 165 in Custer County. Colorado State Patrol assisted in the pursuit. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office spotted the vehicle on Hwy. 165 at mile marker 10 and continued the pursuit. Just past mile marker 8, Jackson turned off into forest service roads. The Custer County Sheriff’s Office found the vehicle about three miles up the mountain road abandoned. The vehicle is now in WPD custody.
Walsenburg Police K-9, Canon City Police K-9, Colorado Department of Corrections K-9, along with an aircraft were called in to search for Jackson. Due to the rough terrain and darkness, the search was called off at about 9 pm Monday.
Walsenburg Police Chief Tommie McLallen said Tuesday, warrants will be issued for Jackson on domestic violence related criminal mischief charges as well as felony eluding charges. Jackson is also wanted out of Pueblo County on five warrants, two felony warrants and three misdemeanor warrants.
As of Tuesday night Jackson remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous to both law enforcement officers and citizens in general. He is a white male, six feet tall, weighing 260 pounds, has brown hair, hazel eyes and several tattoos on his neck and arms.
