RATON — This year’s Parish Fiesta at St. Patrick’s – St. Joseph’s Catholic Church has a little bit of everything for everyone.
Beginning on the evening of Friday, July 31, it will be a weekend bustling with activity. “Today I must stay at your house” (Luke 19:5) is the theme selected for this year and it has set the tone for the festivities.
Rev. John Trambley looks forward to this opportunity for his parish to once again open its arms to the community of Raton. The fiesta is one of Raton’s highly anticipated events and attracts thousands of people annually. Many persons plan their trips into town to visit local friends and family so they can attend the fiesta.
Although Rev. Trambley has been in Raton for only three fiestas so far, he proudly tells of its history and growth. The previous pastor, Fr. Daniel M. Balizan, grew this event with the help of Diana Sanchez and other hardworking parishioners, making it into the large affair it is today.
Many parishioners recall when the fiesta was held inside the parish hall with a handful of game booths and food stalls. Now, the fiesta occupies the entire church grounds and it’s all hands on deck to make it a success.
Planning begins in January and the actual setting up and organizing of the infrastructure begins one month before the event.
To ensure the continued success of the event, the parish has purchased its own restaurant grade food service equipment.
Kathy Honeyfield and Sue Flemming both head the committee which is planning and organizing Fiesta 2015. They lead the charge of all the parishioners and also helpers from other parishes and churches. It is a marvelous opportunity to see the parish community and families come together, showing they can pray hard, work hard and play hard.
At Fiesta 2015, there will be many food booths and in case you have never had a “Funavajo Taco,” now is your chance to try one. 105 Buena Vista Street will not only have 17 game booths, but Saturday and Sunday promises to be filled with non-stop live entertainment.
This year, The First Baptist Church of Raton Worship Band will showcase their talent illustrating that no matter the religion, all can celebrate the love of Jesus.
This event is the parish’s major fundraiser and contributes greatly to the financial support needed for all other activities during the year such as community outreach programs and the popular St. Vincent De Paul Society.
If you are just looking for a sit-down dinner, Friday night’s barbeque is sure to hit the spot. Are you a walker or runner? Then Fiesta 2015’s 5K Walk/Run will get you moving at 6:30 am Saturday morning. If you are simply looking for food, games and pure family fun, rest assured, St. Patrick’s – St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Fiesta won’t disappoint!
