Anthony R. (Tony) Gomez age 66 passed away unexpectedly on July 1, 2015 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born on October 16, 1948 in Trinidad, Colorado to the union of Joe “Ernie” and Rose Ortega Gomez. He was the oldest of eight children. Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Rose Gomez, sister Rosalie Martinez, and nephew Mike Gomez. Anthony is survived by Michele Kearney Gomez of Florida, daughters Jamie Gomez of Florida and Brianne Gomez of South Carolina. He is also survived by his brothers and their spouses: Joe (Loretta) of Denver, CO, Andy (Josie) Alamogordo, NM, Noby (Nancy) of Raton, Frank (Sandra) of Raton, brother-in-law John Martinez of Raton; sisters: Mary Ann (Wayne) Sproule of Raton, and Jackie Fanelli (Jim Davis) Kansas, and their families. Lifelong Friends: Ed Cardenas, Manuel (Doc) Martinez, Bob Dabovich, and Barbara Shaw, as well as many others. He held a special place in his heart for all of his nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Anthony was raised in Raton and graduated from Raton High School in 1966. After graduation Anthony enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was a jet engine mechanic. While in the USAF he traveled many places around the world as well as the US. While stationed in Spain he had the chance to run with the bulls. He also served in Vietnam. He played both fast pitch softball and football with the teams from the air force base. Anthony retired from the air forces as a Master Sargent with 26 years of service.
Anthony received several Master’s Degrees from Troy State University in Alabama. He was an academic advisor, teacher, coached and DJ. He taught in Florida school system, Raton Public Schools, and Albuquerque Public School. He taught bilingual, coached mid school football, and mid school girls basketball while in Raton.
Anthony loved horse racing both betting and being around the track and horses. He also loved every kind of music and had an extensive collection that he shared with family. Tony loved spending time in Raton with his family. He loved hunting, fishing, and picnicking here. One of his very favorite places to be was Cimarron Canyon. He loved it there! Anthony was a very funny, generous, caring, loving, and friendly guy. We will miss him so much! He’ll forever be in our hearts and memories.
Funeral services for Anthony R. (Tony) Gomez will be held on July 25, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home Chapel in Raton. Military Honors will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery immediately following services. Pastor Joseph E. Gomez III is the officiating minister. Dinner will follow at the VFW Hall located at 106 Park Ave.
