RHS Hires New Boys Basketball Coach

Raton High Boys Varsity Basketball will start the basketball season in November with a new coach in Jose Archuleta.

Archuleta is a native of Mosquero where he comes from a family noted for their basketball players. Archuleta has been coaching boys basketball at Raton Middle School for the last three years and is expecting to see some of his former players come up in the ranks. 

Its early to tell how many boys will jump on the court for the season with football up first. Archuleta has been holding open gym for the boys that are interested in basketball this year. So far the turnout has been light but with football prep in progress too he is not surprised. 

The offensive strategy will be to work on shooting after looking at the numbers from last year where shooting stats indicated a 20% completion rate. Most of those were from outside and he will work on the getting the boys to move inside. As for defense rebounds were also a problem and Archuleta noted that basketball was a bit of a contact sport and he will work on getting the boys inside and working for the rebounds. 

One of the things Archuleta will work on is discipline and will work on an ACE program. He wants the boys to develop a positive attitude and be there to work which translates into the “C” or Commitment part of ACE. He wants the boys to be committed to the program and winning. Effort is the “E” in ACE and he is expecting the boys to put forth the effort. He wants boys that will take to the court and work at getting better. He added that lays the foundation for the team and how quickly they can get that program implemented will determine how well they improve on the last year’s season. 

Archuleta hasn’t set any goals for the team yet but is expecting good things if the boys will work for it.
