LA VETA — The Southern Colorado Astronomical Society (SCAS) is pleased to announce that it has plans to build a standing stone circle observatory at the Astronomy Park just west of La Veta. When many of us think of the term observatory we envision a domed building with a telescope sitting atop a mountain, the fact is, man has been building observatories from stone and to watch the heavens and record the passage of time for thousands of years, the most notable being Stonehenge in England.
While the La Veta stone circle won’t be nearly as grand as Stonehenge, the viewer will still be able to observe the passage of the seasons reflected by the shadows cast by stones at sunrise and sunset. To complete the project we need your help. We are looking for stones that are rectangular in shape and roughly a foot wide and at least 3 feet tall. Even if it’s only a small rock you would like to add to the project we would still like to hear from you. Who knows, maybe the stones you donate will be proudly standing there a thousand years from now still gracefully watching the seasons pass! Please contact Russ Erganbright at 303-921-5605 or at erganbright@gmail.com, or Tom Northup at 719-369-2816 to donate.
