Henry P. Roybal Sr. of Santa Fe won the grand prize of a 14-foot Lowe boat on Sunday, June 7 at the annual Sugarite Canyon State Park Fishing Derby. Thomas Pacheco of Raton won the top cash prize of $1,000.
Registrations for the derby totaled 769, and each registration went into the drawing for the boat.
Anglers caught 24 tagged fish out of 100 tagged fish placed in the lake. Each person who caught a tagged fish was eligible for the cash prizes of $1,000, $600, $400 and $100. Pete Martinez of Raton won $600, Al DesChamps of Los Alamos won $400, and Gil Alderette of Raton won $100.
Ralph Leal of Raton won a door prize of a barbecue grill worth about $300.
The Kids’ Derby winner was Henry Roybal, Jr., 16, of Santa Fe who used a worm to catch a rainbow that weighed 2.19 pounds. He won a toy drone.
After the Derby, park staff are tagging four fish with special red tags worth $50 each. Any licensed angler is eligible to catch these fish as long as the fish are turned in by Aug. 31, 2015.
