The Raton City Commission and Raton Public Service met in executive session Tuesday evening to approve the agreement with Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company. (See the entire agreement here HSB Signed Settlement and Release Agreement 060315)

The agreement has been a few months in coming. The disagreement had been over the amount that would be covered after the Wartsila engine blew a piston through the side of the engine.

According to RPS Board President Kathy McQueary the settlement of about $6.25 Million will have to be used to purchase a new 4.3 megawatt generator. Hartford will only release the money once a dated purchase order is received. General Manager Dan Dible said “We do not have a formal calendar for the project but the generator bid should be awarded in 60-90 days. Two weeks ago I directed our engineering firm to begin working on bid documents, begin a list of equipment salvage firms and initiate the process of filing for a new air quality permit from NMED to replace the one for the Wartsila unit.”

He noted in an earlier interview there is a lot of work that will need to be done in the building to remove the old unit and make room to accommodate the new generator.
