UPDATE at 4:00 PM Tuesday: RPS has alerted KRTN that at 5PM today there will be a planned power outage to switch power back to Tri-State. The switch could be instantaneous or last up to 30 minutes according to officials at RPS.
Update from RPS (Raton Utilities) as of Tuesday, May 26th at 9:30 am:
Please conserve electrical use for now to help avoid possible rolling blackouts. Unplug as many appliances as possible, postpone doing laundry and using electric dishwashers, etc. until power can be switched back to Tri-State, the official provider.
The Raton area is temporarily receiving energy from Springer Electric Cooperative, and our power usage is holding for now. Tri-State (Raton’s provider) is checking the lightning arrester & transformer at Burro Canyon, and their crews will make the necessary repairs.
Local RPS Superintendent, Dave Piancino, will notify Raton Fire Department, Police Dispatch and KRTN as soon as he hears about switching back to Tri-State.*
