RATON — Twenty-one students from Raton High School were inducted as new members of the National Honor Society on Thursday April 29. The Historic Schuler Theatre came alive as parents, family members, friends and members of the School Board gathered for the event.
During the induction ceremony, members came up, one by one, to receive their membership cards from RHS Principal Duncan Ware, to sign the National Honor Society log, and to receive their candle lit from the main National Honor Society ceremonial candle.
The new members selected for meeting high standards of scholarship, service, leadership and character are the following: Nayelli Acosta, Alyssa Aragon, DawnRae Arguello, Alee Bird, Darion Bird, Ivy Fernandez, Ashya Gertler, Camille Gonzales, Jacob Hattaway, Dillon Lemons, Makayla Ley, Jami Lopez, Shyanne Martinez, Jason Parker, Alina Pillmore, Lauren Romero, Heather Sandoval, Dustin Stevens, Adelina Stockton, Montana Trujillo and Jacob VanSweden.
An emotional Lynette Simpson, Chapter Advisor, said “We are very proud to recognize these outstanding members of Raton High School. National Honor Society members are chosen for and then expected to continue their exemplary contributions to the school and community.”
RHS’s National Honor Society Officers 2015/2016 were installed: Juan Prieto Archuleta – President, Forrest McConnel – Vice President and Kyler Daniel – Secretary/Treasurer. Juniors and seniors as well as student athletes were also recognized at this ceremony. The Raton High School chapter has been active since 1932, and each year the chapter sponsors several service projects for the school and community. The National Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prestigious national organizations for high school students with chapters in more than 15,000 schools. Since 1921, millions of students have been selected for membership nationwide. The national student recognition organization is proudly sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
