In the early morning hours of May 7, 2015 under a clear, crisp New Mexico sky, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and cherished friend Alfonso Anastacio Lujan was tenderly welcomed in to the arms of his Lord and Creator and those of his loving wife Rachel, family and friends gone before him.

Alfonso was born April 27, 1921 in Shoemaker, New Mexico. He was united in marriage to Rachel Agnes Martinez on August 23, 1939 the daughter of Joe and Celina Martinez.

Alfonso and Rachel raised thirteen children: Patsy, Thelma, Mary Alice, Rachel, Barbara, Alfonso, Maxine, Louis, Gregory, Kathy, Roberta, Jane and Yvette. From this union the Lujan family has raised thirty-four grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Dad loved the company of his children and grandchildren. He especially cherished and enjoyed the relationship and friendship with his son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws; Robert Herrera, Cassie Esquibel, Gilbert Gonzales, Robert Salazar, Ken Shaw, Art Salazar, John Kirkpatrick, Danny Garcia, Tom Lujan, Sherry Lujan, Vandy Lujan and Jackie Lujan. He served as a mentor, friend and supporter of his children and their spouses.

Alfonso and Rachel lived in El Llano for a period of years and raised their oldest daughters in the pristine country known as Sabinoso before moving to Roy. They raised thirteen children with irreplaceable strength, value, love and care.

Alfonso was a tireless worker, cowman, cowboy, and respected civil servant. He retired from the REA with 35 years of service and worked raising cattle all of his life. He especially enjoyed his time on the ranch astride many of his trusty mounts. Alfonso enjoyed the wide open spaces and the peace and contentment of his cattle operation until Alzheimer’s robbed him of his ability to enjoy the life he so cherished. He was an accomplished hunter, horseman, cattleman, and devout Christian. His faith was a precious gift from God. Dad believed Gods word and believed his promises, through is demonstration of true faith. Dad cherished Gods principles, of faith, hope and love. He felt those three principles would always prevail in his fulfilled life of Christianity.

Alfonso served as Mayor of the village of Roy and served on the Roy City Council for many years. During that time he made new friends and cherished those friends he made over the years. He inspired others with his peaceful strength, laughter, amazing intelligence, and charming wit. He was very forgiving person who was bound by his deep love for Christ and his teachings. Alfonso’s love for his family was endless and unconditional and it will continue to brighten and strengthen us throughout our lives and each of our darkest times of need.

He was known for his public speaking and bilingual eulogies given for many friends and relatives.

Alfonso was a wonderful father; he embodied all that was good, just, and righteous. We knew him through his sparkling hazel eyes, The radiant quality of his voice, his brilliant smile, exuberant laughter and the warmth and tenderness he showed everyone around him.

We will miss our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and our hearts break knowing he will not be with us and be able to see his smile or feel his compassion and love.
