TRINIDAD — A Trinidad police officer, responding to a call of an unauthorized person at a vacant trailer at the Almar Trailer park, shot and killed a man found there who pointed a gun at the officer.
The officer, who has not been named, entered the trailer after the park manager opened the door for him, and loudly stated he was a police officer, and anyone in the trailer should show themselves. The officer then found a man later identified as Todd Jamal Dye, 21, of Colorado Springs, and ordered him to the ground, and Dye complied.
As the officer began to use his radio, Dye jumped up and tried to flee. When the officer told Dye to stop, he turned and pointed a gun. The officer then shot Dye, contacted dispatch and requested medical backup. Dye was transported to Mt. San Rafael Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The officer was wearing a body camera throughout the incident, which cooberated his report. The case has been turned over to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The footage of the incident has not been released.
Dye had an active warrant out of El Paso County for contempt of court for absconding from a community corrections facility in Colorado Springs.
