Local teams took to the court this weekend for the first round of state tourney action and District 5A was well represented.
The girls took to the courts Friday night with three local teams hosting first round games. In Cimarron the Lady Rams took on the Quemado Lady Eagles where they struggled in the first half to gain a big lead. The Lady Rams sent the ball up often but it failed to fall true which allowed the Lady Eagles to stay close. Finally the Lady Rams connected and pulled out a big win 56-36.
At the same time the Lady Red Devils took the lead and never looked back as they pulled out a 53-19 to advance in the bracket to play Evangel Christian Academy Tuesday in Bernalillo.
Over in Mosquero the Lady Pirates hosted Carrizozo Lady Grizzlies. The Lady Pirates pulled out the win but it was no runaway with a final score of 51-43. The Lady Pirates will take on Cimarron in Bernalillo on Tuesday.
Saturday night the boys took to the court with most of the local teams traveling except Springer who hosted the Reserve Mountaineers. The Springer boys played their usual fast paced run and gun game. They took the early lead and grew on that with lay-ups and a few threes. When the final buzzer sounded on their game it was a 83-38 win. Springer will take on San Jon on Wednesday in Bernalillo.
San Jon moved forward in the bracket by beating the Wagon Mound Trojans in a close 62-54 game.
The Cimarron boys travelled down to Cliff where they didn’t fair as well as the Lady Rams. The ended their season with a 75-40 loss to Cliff.
The Maxwell Bears on the other hand traveled to Santa Fe for a game that has ended in a bit of controversy. Tied at 23 at halftime the game stayed close, so close in fact that the Santa Waldorf Wolves ended the game with a 55-54 win, or did they. Apparently the scorebook and the scoreboard didn’t have the same score at the end of the game which has created the controversy.
KRTN will follow the teams down south so stayed tuned for state tourney action on 93.9 KRTN Radio.
