The Varsity girls make it a game Friday night as the not only led in the game against the Santa Rosa Lady Lions they took it down to the wire in a made for prime time game.
The girls were definitely in unfamiliar territory as they led much of the game with ties along the way but never pulled out more than six points as they battled the Lady Lions. The girls played an aggressive game attacking the ball. They took the shots to the basket and made several rebounds along the way.
Coach Esparza told KRTN that they had made some changes during the week, one included bringing in Tarryn Trujillo from her usual three point territory. Bringing her in contributed to her being fouled that sent her to the charity stripe where she put in nine of her 19 points on the night.
The JV girls however struggled with Santa Rosa were turnovers and missed shot also plagued them. By the final buzzer it was a 49-26 win for the Lady Lions.
The JV boys once again played their game at Raton Middle School where a running clock took over at halftime as the boys simply couldn’t muster a game against the Lions where they dropped an 88-14 score in the books.
The Raton varsity boys didn’t fair much better Friday night as the Dillon Lemons won the jump ball but not much more. The boys struggled not only in the shot department as it seemed they simply couldn’t buy a basket.
The Lions played an aggressive game and they too attacked the ball and contested every pass as the Tigers had 29 turnovers during the game. As coach Gilbert San Roman commented later you can’t win a game with that many turnovers.
The boys did manage to keep the running clock at bay as they stayed under the 35 point barrier until the fourth quarter. Once the final buzzer sounded to end the game Santa Rosa put a 85-38 score in the books.
