Loyd J. Wilkins Jr. who was born May 2, 1925 to Loyd J, Sr. and Grace Wilkins in Grenville, NM., passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014.
When Loyd was a young man, the Wilkins family moved to Raton and opened Wilkins Lumber. Loyd Jr. and his brothers continued to run the business for many years. Loyd was a successful and respected businessman in Raton and the surrounding area. He was a General Contractor who built many homes in the Raton and Angel Fire area. He also managed the Sands Motel and Restaurant, and owned the Harmony Manor Motel.
Loyd proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Air Force. He was a very active member of the Kiwanis Club and the Masonic Lodge of Raton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Peggy Baird, his first wife Doris Wilkins, his sons Loyd, III “Butch”, and Charles “Buddy” Wilkins.
Loyd was extremely proud of his family. He is survived by his wife Jan Wilkins of the home, his brother Worth Wilkins and wife Molly, his brother F.D. Wilkins and wife Beth, his daughter and son-in-law Connie and Quinton Wood, and his daughter-in-law Sherry Wilkins. H is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Loyd loved Raton and its residents, and he will be missed. He always had a big smile and handshake for everyone he met.
A committal service and inurnment will be Friday July 25, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Masonic Cemetery in Trinidad, Colorado with Pastor Adrianne Coleman officiating.
Arrangements and celebration of love for Loyd J. Wilkins Jr. are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home of Raton.
