The Raton Rodeo Association took a few minutes Saturday night to honor one of its long time members who put in over 30 years of service to the association and was instrumental in helping Raton keep the rodeo going. Judy Young was escorted out to the middle of the arena by Melissa Mack where she was presented with a plaque for her service.
Southwick’s Rocky Mountain Rodeo Company stock did it again Saturday evening as the bulls pulled off another shutout over the cowboys. While the steers in the steer wrestling competition turned away most of the cowboys Bill Claunch posted a 5.2 second time.
The bareback bronc riders had a tough evening while the saddle bronco riders faired much better with Landon Mecham posting a 79 and Allen Boore coming in second with a 75.
The Team of Kyle Roberts and TJ Brown were the only team ropers to connect Saturday evening, while Cody Jordan posted a 14.4 second time in the calf roping. Only three of the Tie-down calf ropers posted a time.
The barrel racers had a much better time Saturday evening as fewer barrels found their way to the dirt. Priscilla Medina posted the fastest time with a 16.09. The next best time was a16.28 posted by Andrea Bushby.
It was the bulls 12 and cowboys 0 Saturday night. Only a couple of riders managed to come close to the 8-second ride while others were finding the dirt week before the halfway mark.
Rodeo action will return to the Jim Young Arena next year but up next for the Raton Rodeo Association will be the mud bog races in September.
