Downed Pole Causes Small Grass Fire

Just after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon RPS and Raton Fire were called to the 300 block of Clark Ave for a report of a pole down and grass fire.

Upon arrival RPS found that a light pole at the corner of Clark and Fourth had fallen onto Clark Ave. The drop wire from a power pole in the alley between Fourth and Third had broken and sparks had caused a small patch of grass in front of a home to catch fire. The fire was quickly extinguished by fire fighters while an RPS crew removed the pole from the street.

No injuries were reported, RPS suspects that the pole had become rotten and was toppled by the high winds that plagued the region.
