Robert “Bob” Yandell passed away unexpectedly at his home in Raton, NM, on April 9, 2014.
He was born at Travis Air Force Base, in San Francisco, CA, on May 25, 1947 to Anne and Wayne Yandell as a result of his father’s military career, Bob’s family traveled the world extensively.
Bob enjoyed a stellar athletic career at Hammond High School in West Virginia, where he excelled in Track and Field, and set records in shot put and discus. His athleticism allowed him to attend the University of Maryland on a football scholarship, where he studied business. Bob received commendations for being both and athlete and a scholar, and remained a sports enthusiast throughout his life.
Bob’s first job was at 7-Eleven, and Safeway soon hired him to run a warehouse, where he supervised the packing of tomatoes. He remained at Safeway for 15 years, until he was hired by a private company in central California as a general manager of a tomato packing facility. After 25 years at that position Bob retired, and he and Dianne, his wife of 37 years relocated to Raton.
Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Yandell of Raton, brother Richard Yandell of Kansas City, MO, a step daughter, Chris Wheeler of Seattle, WA, grandson, Brandon Wheeler of Seattle, WA, two adoring fur-babies, Sophie and Abby; along with numerous friends and relatives.
Memorial services will be Wednesday April 16, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home Chapel with Chris Wheeler officiating.
A reception and celebration of love will be held at the Raton Elks Lodge following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raton Humane Society.
