Raton spirit teams took to the floor in the Pit Friday to compete at the State Spirit Competition.
After the competition Friday both coaches, cheer coach Linda Ortiz and dance coach Sue Holland, were pleased with the girl’s performance. The dance team performed Friday morning and the competition is much the same as in the past with Hope Christian and St. Mikes posting solid performances.
The cheer team will see its toughest competition from Taos and Portales in co-ed cheer. They came out of competition on Friday in second place behind Taos.
On Saturday the dance team hit the floor listed in sixth place and didn’t disappoint, their performance was almost flawless showed what they really could do. The team had a tough few weeks before the state competition with the resignation of head coach Kelli Gabriele. As Sabrina Valdez put it we learned things could change fast and we had to move on. Another issue facing the T-Cats is the fact that the top four dance teams did a precision drill routine instead of a dance routine. As seen in the past if a team nails their drill routine they score much higher than a regular routine like Raton’s.
RHS Cheer hit the floor last in A-AAA co-ed competition so they had seen what the some of the other teams had posted. They too put together an almost flawless routine Saturday morning but when the points were added up they still finished in second place behind Taos.
Next year if cheer can have at least two male team members they will remain in A-AAA Co-ed competition but if they dont they will be competing in AA Cheer with Pecos High being their biggest competition as Pecos won the Class AA competition this year and last year. The dance team will also be competing in AA dance. This year there were only three teams in AA dance so the competition will definitely change.
Congrats to both teams this year!! Ladies you can hold your heads high and will always be number one to us.
