The Raton High Cheer and Tiger Cats dance teams will perform at the State Spirit competition Friday and Saturday in Albuquerque at the Pit on the UNM Campus.
The girls will perform a routine on Friday and another one on Saturday. For the dance team the one on Saturday will be completely different than the one on Friday which is a pom routine. The cheer team will perform a game time routine on Friday and a more dance themed routine on Saturday. The cheer team also gets points for crowd participation so plan to come on out and help the cheer team out.
Both coaches said in an interview that they were excited and ready to go. For the cheer team it will be a different experience in that they will compete in a coed group rather than all girls as they have in the past. As Anthony Saenz put told his teammates “its been one heck of a ride.” Toby Henson joins the team as the other male team member which allowed them to compete as a co-ed team this year. Competing in Co-ed will be to the cheer teams advantage as they will not be competing against some of the power house private schools like Hope Christian and St Mikes.
The dance team is coming off some turmoil this year with the resignation of coach Kelli Gabriele. Coach Sue Holland indicated the girls seem to have overcome this bump in the road and are ready to move on. Competition however is tough in 3A dance as they will compete against the likes of Hope Christian and St Mikes, both private schools.
