Julio Paul Marchiondo age 87, of Raton, NM. longtime owner and operator of the Crystal Restaurant, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2014 in Raton. He was born May 12, 1926 to Italian immigrants, Tony and Anna Marchiondo. He was the ninth of ten children. As a young boy he and all his siblings helped operate Marchiondo’s Golden Rule and New York Store. Julio was a life-long resident of Raton. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the United States Navy, a member of the St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, life member of the Raton Elks and life member of the V.F.W.
Julio married the love of his life, Betty Klantchnek in 1951 and together they raised their family and loved spending time with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid golfer, helping clear the rocks and debris from the Raton Golf Course in the early years. He spent his life seeking and pursuing many business opportunities, often promoting Raton. He believed in feeding everyone and would often insist that his visitors eat before leaving his presence. Later in life he loved watching the many deer and bear that tramped through his backyard. He was in awe of his beloved hummingbirds, and was insistent that they be fed regularly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, sisters, Alberina and Laurina, brothers, Charles, Johnny, Tony, Joe and Eddie, and one grandchild Ivy Hope Hunnicutt.
Julio is survived by three daughters, Janet Marchiondo of Raton, Katy Marchiondo of Raton, and Pam Hunnicutt and husband Wayne of Raton. One son Julio P. Marchiondo Jr. and wife Nancy of Albuquerque, NM. One sister, Carlina Moore of Albuquerque, NM and one brother William C. Marchiondo of Albuquerque, NM. One sister-in-law Millie Marchiondo of Raton. Nine grandchildren, Wendy Mileta and husband P.J., Jamie Marez and husband Mike, Sarah Marchiondo, Sean Taylor and Aiden Marchiondo, Autumn, July, Silver and Jasper Hunnicutt and four great grandchildren, Dante, Camryn and Madisyn Mileta, and Giana Marez. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Thursday January 16, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Patrick’s-St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Raton recited by Frank Cimino Jr. Mass of the resurrection will follow at 11:00 A.M. with Father John Trambley as the celebrant. Rite of Christian Burial will be in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Arrangements and celebration of love for Julio Marchiondo are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home of Raton. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Anna and Tony Marchiondo & Family Scholarship Fund at the International Bank 200 S. 2nd Street., Raton NM. or Mt. Calvary Cemetery Fund via St. Patrick’s – St. Joseph Catholic Church, 104 Buena Vista Raton, NM.
