While it only took three games to win the match, none of the games were a real runaway for Raton as the Taos Lady Tigers moved into the second round of the detract tourney by upsetting Robertson Lady Cardinals Tuesday night in a 3-to-1 match.
Raton took the lead in game one but it was a back and forth game until late when Raton’s front three ladies made the blocks and spikes for points and the win. The game was tied several times early on. Taos was definitely ready to play volleyball.
As game two got underway Raton took the lead and extended it by six until Taos came roaring back and tied the game at 17. it remained tied through 18 and Raton took back the lead and moved on to the win.
Raton again took an quick lead in game three and kept it this time to the end. Taos however played a close game and didn’t let Raton get to far away. Through out the match the girls played smart ball and often times would just lay the ball over the net instead of making the hard spike. Often times the quick little tip over caught the other team off guard and let the ball fall for the point.
Taos came into the tourney at the bottom of the district winning only two games in district play while they lost all their matches. Raton had won three matches including one match against Robertson. Raton will now move on to West Las Vegas Friday night. The winner of that match will play Pojoaque on Saturday for the district championship.
