It Took Five for the Win
By Marty Mayfield

It took the Lady Tigers five games the last time they met West Las Vegas for the win. This time it took West five games to make the win with the tiebreaker being a real tiebreaker.
The Lady Tigers came out strong with Mikala Vertovec finding the spot with her kills, as did Kalista and Shania Dorrance. The ball at times was hit so hard that it blew through the Lady Dons blocks. But as tough as the last match was in Vegas this one saw the Lady Dons return the kills as effectively as Raton. That kept the score close for the first two games of the match tying it up at 18 in game one.
During game two West kept it close tying the game at 5, 12 and 13 before Raton found the lead and barely kept it for the win. Again both teams were making the blocks as well as the kills with several balls flying off of player’s hands and out of bounds.
When game three started the fans were left scratching their heads wondering where the Lady Tigers went. West pulled out early in the game finding the holes in the Raton defense as well as Raton hurting their own play with lost passes and balls out of bounds.
Game four continued the same as game three with West pulling out to a big lead of 12-1 and later as much as 16-3 before the Lady Tigers found a rally and pulled to within three 20-23. The Dons however found the fire to get the next two points for the win.
The tiebreaker fifth game was simply that a tiebreaker with both teams taking the lead with the final tie score at six. When the dust cleared and the final whistle blew the yellow shirted Lady Dons had pulled out the squeaker 15-11.
The Lady Tigers will play Robertson Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and follow up with Taos in Taos next Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
