The Taos Lady Tigers travelled over the hill to Raton’s Jungle Saturday afternoon for their first district volleyball match of the season.
Working farther back from the net than they usually do Raton took an early lead. The Taos Lady Tigers have a couple of tall girls who can make the block at the net when needed. Working around that Raton lobbed many of their hits over the blocks and into the backcourt.
When Raton did go to the net Bertha Vigil and Deazia Cardenas were quite often there to meet the ball. Raton however kept it up and pulled out the first game 25-17.
In game two Raton simply couldn’t get it together and fell behind by as much as eight points but the Taos lost the touch and Raton pulled within one before they finally pulled out the second game at 25-23.
Game three was a different story all together as Raton took a lead and never looked back pulling out as far as 10 points at one time. They went on to win that game by 25-13.
Raton again took a lead in game four and found their marks with lobs over the net rather than a lot of the hard hitting spikes that Vertovec and the Dorrance twins are known for. Taos did at one point start finding the holes in the Raton defense and caught up to with in four points at one time before Raton went on to the win with Taos c lose behind.
Raton will host West Las Vegas on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. for another district match.
