Wow what a nail bitter at Tiger Gym Saturday afternoon as the Lady Tigers host the Lady Tigers from La Junta for a rematch from summer camp.
Coach Zack Romero knew it would be a tough match as the two teams met this summer and split the match during a camp that both teams attended. It started out in game one with Raton falling behind but staying close. Once the girls got their groove strong play at the net and Makayla Vertovec and Shania Dorrance teamed up slams over the net for points. As the game neared completion Raton tied it at 23 and took the lead for the win.
Game two was another nail bitter from the get go as each team took turns tying the game and taking the lead. Again tied at 23 Raton managed to take the lead on tough plays and a long volley.
Game three started out tight and Raton finally pulled out to a small lead and kept up the strong play at the net and made a few slams hit for points. Raton pulled out to a 17-10 lead but errors and a lack of communication allowed La Junta to pull back within three. Raton managed to keep the lead as both teams seemed to falter in the hot gym. As the game closed in to a win the volleys continued for several trips over the net. All it took though was a missed pass or an off balance hit to end the volley and score a point for each team. Raton however managed to play the ball their way and after a long volley finally had one fall into the net and took the win.
Both teams played good volleyball but still had their moments where mistakes would cost them the lead or create a tie. As the year goes along and the team gets back in the groove they will be a team to contend with.
Both the JV and C-teams have a lot of work ahead of them. A lack of communication during the game and simply learning how each other plays will be the key to their success. This will be a growing season for them.
