Summer reading takes off in Raton

by Colette Armijo
WJ 250x55RATON — Arthur Johnson Memorial Library in Raton is the place to be on Wednesday mornings, especially during the summer.  Raton’s Summer Reading Program got under way in mid June.  The program continues every Wednesday from 10 am until 11 am.  Children, ages birth to 6th grade, flock to the library for this year’s program themed “Every Hero Has a Story”.
A talented team of group leaders lead the charge of coordinating the morning’s activities. Summer Reading Wednesdays at the library begin with children having their reading logs processed for Reading Money, which they use at the library store.  Then the fun begins as the young readers are put into groups according to ages.  The group leaders read to them and then, together, they work on exciting projects such as finger puppets and gliders.  Last Wednesday, a magician, Mr. E, delighted those who attended with his presentation, “Books and Magic.”  The participants were also given gifts of book bags and books.
Thayla Wright, library director since 1999, has worked at the Arthur Johnson Memorial Library since 1993.  For this program, she leads a team of four, each of whom are hands-on, ensuring that the children have a wonderful time.  This program came about as a result of the city  joining forces with the state library.
Raton’s Summer Reading Program will continue every Wednesday through the month of July.  On July 29, the program will come to an end with a spectacular celebration of fun.  Children will be treated to fun, a cake walk, and grab bags, and be given the opportunity to display their artistic skills with sidewalk chalk.
Whether you are a local or just passing through, the summer reading program is a quick, enjoyable stop for kids and those who are still kids at heart.
