New Mexico State Police and Colfax County Sheriff Deputies are investigating a stabbing\/car jacking at the Tinaja Rest Area near mile marker 435 on I-25 that occurred just after 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning April 14, 2024.<\/p>\n
Colfax County Sheriff deputies were dispatched at 7:17 a.m. to the incident and upon arrival deputies found 79 year old David Adams who was still breathing and unconscious. Raton Fire and Emergency Service along with deputies provided medical assistance to the victim however the victim was later pronounced deceased at the scene. A New Mexico State Police Officer was near the Tinaja Rest Area on a traffic stop and was alerted to the incident by a maintenance worker.<\/p>\n
The wife of the victim reported to officers and deputies that their grey 2016 BMW was missing. Raton Police Dispatch sent out a BOLO for the vehicle and\u00a0New Mexico State Police spotted the vehicle and a single suspect in San Miguel County. Following a pursuit where a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) maneuver was used to stop the vehicle. The suspect was successfully apprehended and taken into custody by NMSP. The suspect was identified as 21 year old Dorien Ray of Union City Georgia.<\/p>\n
During the investigation of the incident NMSP Investigations Bureau Agents found a white 2019 Toyota 4Runner, at the scene of the stabbing, that had been reported stolen from Aurora Colorado. The suspect described as a black male in his 20s, had brandished a knife in the Colorado theft. Items from the Aurora incident were also found near the rest area.<\/p>\n
According to Sheriff Leonard Baca the suspect was booked into the Vigil Maldonado Detenction Center.<\/p>\n
Dorien Ray has been charged with
\nMurder in the 1st degree (open charge)
\nArmed Robbery
\nPossession of a stolen vehicle
\nUnlawful taking of a motor vehicle<\/p>\n
