Kearny 4<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> and 5<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> grade students would shift to the current Raton Mid School to join the 6<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> and 7<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> grades in that building.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The plan also means that the Raton High School would accommodate 8<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> thru 12<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> grades.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The latest proposal came up at last night\u2019s meeting and was endorsed by several Raton teachers and upon approval of the NM Public Education Dept. (NMPED) will affect the district for the next school year., 2015- 16. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The decision passed on a 3-2 vote and was made necessary because of declining enrollment and a failed school bond election last November that would have built a new elementary school for the district.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In 2007 the Raton School District had just under 1,500 students and this year the enrollment has slipped to under 1,000 total students. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Supt. Dr. Neil Terhune told KRTN the savings would amount to approximately 350 to 400 thousand dollars per year with the consolidation.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Savings would include personnel as one administrator; library\/media\/secretary and custodian positions would be eliminated.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Most of the teaching positions would be retained with retirement and attrition projected to keep the teacher\u2019s staffing levels at a steady rate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Terhune also said the first year\u2019s savings would probably already be spent.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">The Mid \u2013 School roof is in bad need of replacement and projected for a total cost of $850,000 of which $380,000 would be the responsibility of the Raton District.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">Should the proposal be turned down by the NMPED, the second alternative, according to Terhune,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">would be to close two schools.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">In other business, the board gave its approval of a resolution for an Educational Technology Bond that would give the school the necessary money to bring the district up to date with the ever-changing needs of today\u2019s technology.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\">There will be a public hearing in a couple of weeks and another appearance on the agenda, before anything can be passed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Also at Monday\u2019s Raton School Board meeting, this month\u2019s recognition was given out to: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Tammy Gagliardi \u2013 Support Staff member; (Longfellow)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Brandon Hightree \u2013 Elementary Teacher; (Kearny)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Wayne Hogg \u2013 Secondary Teacher ( Alternative School)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Student recognition at Raton High School included: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Trevor Portillos; Most-Improved<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Autumn Archuleta; Service Award<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">Halle Medina; Academic Award<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><b><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Raton Board of Education made a consolidation decision at Monday night\u2019s regular board meeting that would close the Kearny School for the upcoming school year.
