As a result of welding operations on the Richey Ranch southwest of Raton Thursday afternoon February 12, Raton Fire and Emergency Services along with Colfax County District 8 were called out for a hay stack fire at 1:32 p.m.

Upon arrival they found a hay stack on fire producing a good amount of smoke that could be seen from parts of Raton Thursday afternoon. Fire Fighters requested help with the blaze from Raton Public Service who sent out a backhoe and Raton Public Works who sent out a front end loader. Cimarron Ambulance also responded for that just in case need.

Fire Fighters stayed on the scene until around 9:00 p.m. Thursday and were back on the scene Friday morning to conclude mop up operations on the fire. The hay stack was a total loss according to Deputy Fire Chief Dusty Russell.

This fire and others that the department has responded to in the last couple of weeks bear witness to the dry conditions and the need for everyone to be extra careful when conducting outside activities. Colfax County Fire Marshall Nate Sandoval noted that all the Fire Chiefs in the county are assessing conditions in their respective districts and that a fire ban will likely be imposed in the near future due to the dry conditions.
