Public Service Announcement
From Chief John D. Garcia
The Raton Police Department would like to inform the citizens of Raton and the surrounding communities that we have seen an increase in the circulation of counterfeit currency being passed throughout the area.
In discussions with management at InBank, the most commonly identified counterfeit denominations are $50.00 and $20.00 bills. InBank has reported that local businesses have unknowingly deposited bills clearly marked with “FOR MOTION PICTURE USE ONLY,” resulting in those amounts being deducted from their deposits—directly causing financial loss to those businesses.
We urge all citizens and business owners to carefully inspect any currency they receive or use during transactions. Taking a moment to review your cash can help protect you, your business, and our community from further harm.
Please be advised that intentionally distributing counterfeit currency is a fourth-degree felony and will result in arrest and prosecution.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and for your continued cooperation in keeping our community safe.
