Raton Fire and Emergency Services and Colfax Rapid Response responded to 1425 Arnold Street in South Raton about 8:30 p.m. Monday evening to the report of heavy smoke in the residence.

Upon arrival fire fighters found heavy smoke coming from the front of the house and the fireplace that was getting out of control filling the house with smoke. The occupant of the home was standing outside holding the door. Firefighters pulled a hand line and extinguished the flames in the living room area and had the fire out by 8:39 p.m.

Once the smoke had been fully removed from the residence it was determined there was extensive smoke and some heat damage throughout the living room, hallway and the area where the fireplace place was located. It is also believed that the family dog suffered smoke inhalation and did not make it as a result.
