FROM YOUR COLFAX COUNTY ASSESSOR
KRISTI E. GRAHAM AND STAFF
Are you or someone you know a property owner? Are you receiving all the exemptions (tax savings) you are entitled to?? Then this information is for you!!
Head of Family Exemption– One exemption of $2,000 per household may be applied against the taxable value of residential property. Only one person in a household may qualify as Head of Family, and it may only be applied on one county in the state. Property owners must apply for this exemption for it to be granted. Upon approval and granting of this exemption, the exemption will carry forward from year to year, eliminating the need to reapply each year, unless there is a change of property ownership.
Veterans Exemption– The Veteran’s Exemption is a $10,000 reduction in the taxable value of your real estate. Any honorably discharged veteran (or the veteran’s unmarried surviving spouse) who has applied with the New Mexico Veteran’s Service Commissions and has been issued a “Certificate of Eligibility” may qualify for this benefit. For first time applicants, the certificate must be presented to the Colfax County Assessor’s Office within the deadline. Once the exemption is claimed and applied, it remains applied to the property until the ownership of that property changes.
% Disabled Veteran Exemption– Any veteran who is deemed ANY % disabled (or the unmarried surviving spouse) who has applied with the New Mexico Veteran’s Service Commission and has been issued a “Certificate of Eligibility” may qualify for a THAT % exempt from property taxes on his/her place of residence up to 5 acres. Once the exemption is claimed and applied, it remains applied to the property until the ownership of that property changes.
Valuation Freeze– If you are 65 years or older OR 100% disabled (at any age) AND had a modified gross income of $44,200, you may apply for a property-valuation freeze for your residence. Application must be submitted along with proof of identification income age & disability. Freezing your valuation will help minimize your property value increases. This exemption must be applied for annually.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY? Please keep in mind that the deadline to apply for the above listed exemptions is 30 days after the official date of the mailing of the “Notice of Value”. Colfax County typically mails notices on or around March 31st of each year. You can apply in person or by mail. Veteran Exemptions must be claimed in person.
ANY NEW CONSTRUCTION OF $10,000 OR MORE NEEDS TO BE REPORTED TO THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE BY THE END OF FEBRUARY.
