Raton Police arrested Dominic Christopher Mateer (19) and a 17-year-old juvenile male for the four drive by shootings that occurred in Raton over a couple of weeks in November of 2025.

On one of the videos that a neighbor provided during one of the shootings showed a black sedan in the area during the shooting. Officers began looking for a black car and on November 16, 2025, officers made a traffic stop on a black car that matched the description of the car that had been seen in the area of the shootings in East Raton. The vehicle was impounded for further investigation, and officers interrogated the 17-year-old male owner of the car. It was learned that Mateer at times that Mateer had borrowed his car. During questioning the juvenile’s story changed several times as to when Mateer had borrowed his car.

During the questioning it was determined that Mateer was selling Mushrooms and weed and sold weed to minors. One of the targeted individuals allegedly owed Mateer money and that was the reason for a residence on East 4th Street to be targeted. Another residence on Vermejo Street was also targeted for a similar reason according to the juvenile male. The juvenile told police that Mateer owned several guns including a 9-mm handgun which is believed to have been used in the shootings.

Further investigation confirmed that the vehicle that Raton Police had stopped and placed in impoundment was also used in a shooting in Trinidad, Colorado. The juvenile stated the Mateer had borrowed his car while he was at work at the Arby’s in Trinidad.

On November 22, 2025, Mateer voluntarily contacted Raton Police at the Raton Police Department. During the questioning Mateer denied being involved in any of the shootings. Mateer provided alibis to officers that did not pan out. Mateer continued to deny involvement in the shootings but after some contemplation did admit to being present for the shooting incident in the 800 block of East 4th Street.

In his statement Mateer stated that while he, his girlfriend and the Juvenile were out driving that the juvenile instructed him to drive by the projects and while in the vicinity of 800 East 4th he heard gunfire coming from the back seat where the juvenile was sitting. Mateer continued to deny his involvement in the incidents.

Mateer’s girlfriend Justice Miera was also interviewed, and her accounts of the incidents were also inconsistent with the other two individual’s statements. Officers did get permission to view Miera’s snapchat and found pictures and videos with timestamps that also contradicted statements. The video and pictures did confirm the description of the firearm that Mateer said was used.
