Raton School Board Meets On New Night

The Raton School Board met Thursday evening September 18, 2025, on their new night to hear a presentation from Seth Ward on the NCCER program and approve policy.

Board members heard from Jennifer Mattorano, Student Senate Representative noting that with homecoming over activities are winding with a blood drive the only thing that they have scheduled for next month.

Seth Ward presented a report on the National Center for Construction Education and Research program. This program teaches students construction skills and aids them in the testing process. The program is free to the school and students as several national companies sponsor the program so that it will be free to students.

This construction program also prepares students for the job market and helps with OSHA certification. At Raton High they are teaching CORE programs and will begin with welding and move on to construction.

Superintendent Medina met with PSFA today on the new building project. The design phase will begin soon after a meeting the last week of September.

The cell phone policy is working and staff at the high school are creating a document with changes and adjustments to the policy. Staff is having to deal with smart watches but are reporting that learning is taking place and parents are even happy with the way the policy is working.

Board members discussed the wellness policy for the district. Medina noted it is the same as last year and simply needs new signatures.

Board members approved the purchase of new security cameras for activity buses from 247 Security. The new cameras will cost $17,562 for six new systems.

Board members approved the purchase of a 2026 Ford Expedition for $74,320 with a 8% discount for a total price of $68,926.

Policy Advisory No 266 – IA – Instructional Goals and Objectives

Policy Advisory No 268 – JLCEC Cardiac Emergency Response Plan-Automated External Defibrillators

Policy Advisory No 269 – JLIH – Parental Guidance for Water Safety

The following policies are in the second read and will be brought back for approval at the next board meeting in October.

.With that the board moved into executive session to discuss personnel matters with no action to be taken and then moved on to adjournment.
