Tomasita ‘Tommie’ Bernal passed from this earth peacefully on the morning of July 11, 2025, with her family by her side. Tommie was a Raton resident for the last 40 years. She was born in Weston Colorado, on April 30, 1937, and grew up in Starkville. She was the oldest daughter of 12 siblings. And they all remained close to one another. Tommie graduated from high school in El Paso, TX. She returned home and started work at Miners Hospital as a CNA. She met the love of her life, Blas, and they were married for 48 years before his passing in 2005. They had a son, Samuel, and a Daughter, Sharon. They traveled all over New Mexico while working in Construction and made many lifelong friends along the way. Her greatest joy was when she became a grandma to 3 grandchildren. She was a young fun grandma & she enjoyed spoiling & spending time with them. They remained close to their Grammy and saw her often to cheer her up🙏🏽. Tommie was very active in her Church life and was a member of First Baptist church. She loved volunteering every summer for Vacation Bible School. She helped in all areas, but especially enjoyed working in the kitchen. Tommie was a cook for most of her career. She worked in many restaurants and was well known for her excellent cooking, especially her baked goods, such as her Giant cinnamon rolls, her homemade tortillas, pies and homemade Choke cherry jelly. Tommie hosted Sunday dinners every Week for her family and made delicious meals for everyone. She loved to spend time with her family, they were the center of her life. Tommie worked at the Raton Nursing Home dietary Cook for years and eventually transitioned to work at MCMC Long Term dietary Cook, where she remained until her retirement. Tommie loved gardening, and every spring and summer, you could see her outside doing her yard work alongside her daughter Sharon. Tommie loved to make handmade quilts during the winter months, and she gifted many family and friends with her beautiful creations. She loved having Bible study with her friends. Tommie was a social woman; she was always attending graduations or parties. Tommie loved traveling with her family and went on many adventures. She especially loved visiting the ocean in Mexico several times with her Brother Jaime & his family. She loved to send out greeting cards and never forgot birthdays or Anniversaries. Tommie was a special loving woman of God, and it showed in all the care she showed to her family and friends. Wherever Mom went, it felt like home; the feeling of home was wherever she was.
Mom taught all of us to rely on God during both good and bad times. She wanted us to be joyful despite all our trials. We pray for guidance, Faith, and continued blessings for everyone.
